Mickle’s Might: A-Qualifier for Kim Mickle in Sydney

Kim Mickle set an A-Qualifier for the 2013 Athletics World Championships in Moscow

WAIS athlete Kim Mickle has made a perfect start to her 2013 athletics campaign, registering an A-Qualifying 62.53m in winning the women’s javelin at the weekend Sydney Athletics Tour event.

Despite taking a fall and sustaining light ankle swelling at a Perth Grand Prix meet earlier this month, Mickle was cleared fit to compete and responded in fine fashion, with a throw of 62.53m.

The effort was Mickle’s fifth furthest in her storied career, and guarantees the Commonwealth Games silver medallist selection for the Australian team at this year’s world championships if she can win an eighth national title at the up-coming Australian Athletics Championships in Melbourne.

Before Mickle is required to throw for her Moscow world championship ticket, she will headline this weekend’s (Saturday March 16) Perth Track Classic at the Western Australian Athletics Stadium.

The stage had been set for a “throw-down” between Mickle and her Commonwealth Games conqueror Sunette Viljoen, but a back injury forced the South African record holder out of competition, and will also see her miss the Perth event.

Mickle’s 62.53m was too good for her fellow Australian opponents, with the ACT’s Kelsey-Lee Roberts second (55.74m) and NSW’s Karen Clarke third (47.79m).
