WAIS swimming scholarship holder Travis Nederpelt and his City of Perth training partner Jessica Pengelly capped off a successful stint in Singapore over the weekend competing at the third-stop of the 2010 FINA World Swimming Cup Series.

25 year-old Nederpelt posted impressive times in both the 200m Butterfly and 1500m Freestyle to claim silver medals in both events behind a formidable Brazillian contingent. Nederpelt claimed silver behind Thiago Pereira in the Men’s 200m Butterfly with a time of 1.55.00, shattering his previous best by over a second.

WAIS and City of Perth coach Matt Magee was delighted that Nederpelt had factored their work in training into a competitive swim.

“I’m happywith the way Trav swam tonight. He swam a slick 1.56 in the heats and came out and took it to another level in the Final. We talked about”intelligent racing” this weekend and isolated a number of key factors that would enable this sort of outcome,” he said.

“Trav has smashed his PB (personal best) with an intellectual approach, this is where success lies.”

Nederpelt went on to claim his second silver medal in as many days when he posted a 15.06-minute swim in the 1500m Freestyle Sunday evening. The effort pushed Nederpelt up to No5 on the Australian Rankings ahead of Australian Commonwealth Games representative Ryan Napolean.

Teammate Jessica Pengelly (19)swam a tough schedule of events over the weekend leaving Singapore this morning with a swag of medals to show for her efforts.

On Day one Pengelly claimed the Women’s 800m Freestyle title with ease in a field that was lacking in quality, the time for Pengelly not so much the focus more than the effort required. “I through up twice after the race, and then had to sit through an arduous drug testing procedure, trying to consume liquids,” Pengelly said.

Day two saw a turn-around of form for theBeijing Olympian claiming silver medals in boththe Women’s 400m Freestyle and400m Individual Medley. The Freestyle medal came with a new personal best time and reassurance that her efforts over winter are paying dividends for the medley specialist. “I’ve been working really hard on my freestyle lately, it is good to see some progress. I’m happy with that performance.”

In the Medley event – the last on the busy program -Pengelly faced off against World Record Holder Allison Smit from the USA and the former World Record Holder Kathryn Meaklin from South Africa.

After a substantial heat swim, Pengelly split the two world-beaters in the Final finishing in second ahead of Meaklin with Smit taking the win in a World-class 4min 28sec effort.
