Parnov Misses Final in London
Liz Parnov cleared 4.35m in the qualifying round of the women’s pole vault at the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London, finishing 15th and short of the final.
Parnov made her first representative team appearance for Australia since the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and entered competition in London at 4.20m, which she cleared at the second attempt.
The 23 year-old registered a first time clearance at 4.35m but was unsuccessful with three attempts at 4.50m.
The 2012 Olympian has battled back to full fitness in 2017, following a serious leg injury sustained in a training accident last year.
In the women’s final, Greece pole vaulter Ekaterini Stefanidi was crowned world champion, sailing over at 4.91m to win the gold medal.
American Sandi Morris was second with a clearance at 4.75m, whilst Venezuelan Robeilys Peinado captured bronze at 4.65m on countback, ahead of a host of four athletes who also successfully cleared the height.
In the men’s 800m, Western Australian Peter Bol ran 1:49.65 for seventh place in his heat, missing qualification.
The final will be contested on Tuesday with Kenyan Kipyegon Bett (1:45.02) fastest qualifier.
Western Australia’s Sam McEntee will commence his men’s 5000m campaign on Wednesday, with home-nation hero Mo Farah set to feature prominently.
