Podium Finishes for WAIS at Road Nationals

After four days of tough riding, WAIS cyclists come out with a few podium finishes at the MARS Cycling Australia Road National Championships in Ballarat and Buninyong.

It was the eighth consecutive year that the Ballarat region has hosted the championships, as a record 20,000 fans attended the races and 160,000 watched the live broadcast on SBS TV.

The event features three major disciplines including time trial, criterium and road race, with WAIS riders representing well in all three.

Luke Durbridge finished second in the time trial late last week, while Robert Power and Bradley Linfield rounded out second and third respectively on the podium in the under 23’s road race on Saturday.

Both Power and Linfield acknowledged their own efforts while praising Caleb Ewan (NSW) on his gold medal ride.

“I gave it my best and this guy (Ewan]) put on a show as always and anytime I get to race with him is awesome,” explained Power. “I think everyone was trying to get away from Caleb but he’s just really awesome, he stayed there and got the win. He deserves it.”

“Obviously it’s really good to get bronze and hopefully it’s good to put on the resume winning bronze in the under 23 Australian title,” Linfield said.

Cam Meyer placed a gutsy fourth in the Criterium and was praised by winner Simon Gerrans for his race.

“Cameron Meyer fully committed for me today, he rode his guts out there for me so it’s huge thrill to finish it off for the team,” said Gerrans.

Out of the 135 riders who set out on the Mt Buninyong circuit, only 41 finished the punishing 183km race.
