WAIS cyclist Rob Power has secured a podium finish at the GP San Vendemiano in Italy riding for an Australian U23 team.

Having recently been laid low through illness, Power returned to form in the one day race, to position himself in a breakaway, and launch a late surge to third position after the initial breakaway had been closed.

“It was a great ride by the team to support Rob and control the peloton for over half of the race with no help to chase back a three minute gap,” reported Cycling Australia sports director James Victor.

Power and eventual race winner Gianni Moscon managed to re-establish a min break going over the final climb at Via dei Pascoli, but Power was relegated to third after Stefano Nardelli bridging across and launched a surprise move from behind to catch the Western Australian in the closing stages of the race.

Next for the team is Rhone Alpes Isere Tour starting in France on Thursday.

“Robert has returned to a good healthy shape and is looking forward to the queen stage,” said Victor.
