Rowers prepare for World Rowing Cup III

In the last World Cup before the 2017 World Rowing Championships, a number of Western Australian rowers will be gaining race practice.

  

Rowing World Cup III will be held in Lucerne, Switzerland from July 7-9 and is set to play an important role in the Australian selection process for the World Rowing Championships.

Rio Olympian David Watts will compete in the Men’s Double Scull alongside ACT resident Luke Letcher. The Men’s Double Scull heats will commence on the 7th of July at 9:00am local time, with finals scheduled to take place on Sunday morning. 

Joshua Hicks will begin racing on Friday the 7th as part of the Men’s Coxless Four, whilst 23-year-old James Kerr will compete with the Lightweight Men’s Quadruple Scull crew.

The Lightweight Men’s Quadruple Scull competition begins tomorrow (7th July) afternoon with finals to be raced on Saturday evening.

Also selected as part of the Rowing World Cup Team, from WA, was Cameron Fowler. Fowler was named as reserve for the aforementioned Quadruple Scull crew.

Following the completion of Rowing World Cup III the athletes will continue preparations for the 2017 World Rowing Championships.

Late last week Rowing Australia made the decision to add an extra two crews to their 2017 World Rowing Under 23 Championships team, handing Western Australia’s Sam Marsh a position in the Men’s Coxed Four.

The Under 23 World Championships event will be held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria from the 19th to the 23rd of July. 

Marsh joins previously selected Western Australian rowers Annabelle McIntyre and Bronwyn Cox who will compete in the Women’s Pair.

WAIS Rowing Coach, Rhett Ayliffe was also selected to coach both the Under 23 Women’s Pair and the Under 23 Men’s Single Scull.
