Rowing Australia has issued athlete invitations for selection trials onto the senior Australian Team for 2017.

Trials will be held in Penrith at the Sydney International Regatta Centre between March 11-16 for Australian Team selections for World Rowing Cups 2 and 3.

The invitation list includes four Western Australian athletes, highlighted by Rio Olympian David Watts who will trial in the men’s heavyweight scull squad.

Watts made his debut for Australia at Olympic level in Brazil in 2016, competing alongside Chris Morgan in the men’s double.

Currently based and training out of Canberra, Watts will aim to be part of the Australian team that competes at the World Cups, which act as precursor to selection for the Australian Team to compete at the 2017 Rowing World Championships in Florida, USA in September.

Watts won a world championship silver medal as a member of the Australian men’s quad scull crew at the titles held in France in 2015.

Emerging Western Australian talents Cameron Fowler and James Kerr will both trial for seats in the men’s lightweight division with the duo forming part of an eight-strong men’s lightweight group.

Western Australian Joshua Hicks who is now registered with the Sydney Rowing Club, but is currently based in Canberra with the NTC program, has been invited to trial with the men’s heavyweight sweep squad.
