The WAIS Sailing program has received a huge boost, with the appointment of Tristan Brown as Sailing Coach. Brown returns to his home state of WA from NSW where he was most recently NSWIS Single Handed Coach and Australian Sailing Team Laser Radial Coach at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Since graduating from WAIS in 2012, Brown has accumulated a huge amount of knowledge in the sport of sailing, particularly in the ILCA (Laser) class where he was Laser Radial Men’s World Champion twice before turning his focus to coaching.

Head Coach Matt Jerwood says the program is lucky to have Brown back in WA and helping our mission to develop world beating sailors.

“We are thrilled to welcome Tristan back home and into the Sailing Team at WAIS” he said.

“Tristan brings a wealth of knowledge, skills and experience to the program with an impressive record of developing world class ILCA (Laser) sailors.” “He brings a detailed and diligent approach, encouraging athletes to seek knowledge and become students of our great sport, all the while keeping it fresh, fun and engaging.”

Brown, who is back on deck this week at WAIS, will lead the ILCA class coaching, completing a key part of the program puzzle. The sailors are chomping at the bit to get out on water with him in the coming weeks, while Brown himself is excited by the opportunity to be back in WA.

“It is fantastic to be back at WAIS working under Matt’s leadership and with the elite sailors within the program” he said.

“I am looking forward to the challenge of further developing the great legacy that has been established over time by the previous WAIS athletes & coaches.” “During my past decade in coaching, I have acquired a lot of knowledge across a wide range of environments which I look forward to utilising to support of the next generation of WA sailors.”
