Silver medals for WA cyclists at Track World Cup in New Zealand

WA cyclists Sam Welsford and Cameron Meyer claimed silver medals at the New Zealand round of the UCI Track World Cup over the weekend.

Reigning World Champion and World Record holder Welsford lined up Thursday claiming silver in the team pursuit. After qualifying fastest in 3mins 50.903ses Welsford and the Australia team improved their time in the next round stopping the clock in 3mins 50.273secs beating Canada to move in to the gold medal ride.

The hotly contested final saw the lead change throughout the race between Australia and Switzerland. The final kilometres saw the Australia quartet break up allowing Switzerland to take the gold.

Nine time world champion Meyer again showed his strength on the track lining up in the omnium and Madison, winning silver medals in each, with both closely contested battles with New Zealand.

Sprinter Matt Richardson featured in the team sprint with Australia finishing eight to keep their qualifying hopes for Tokyo alive.

All three will line up this weekend at the Anna Meares Velodrome in Brisbane looking to add to their medal haul.
