Six WA Talents Selected for 2019 World Para-Athletics Champs in Dubai

Published On: 30 September 2019

Athletics Australia today announced its squad of 37
athletes to contest the 2019 World Para-Athletics Championships in Dubai (Nov
7-15), with that team including six Western Australians.

It includes a mixture of experience and new blood, with the WA
team set to be highlighted by the Paralympic calibre of Chad Perris, Ella
Pardy
and Madison de Rozario, whilst also including 2017 World
medallist Sarah Edmiston, 2018 Commonwealth Games medallist Rhiannon
Clarke
and Australian Flame team debutant Robyn Lambird.

De Rozario is set for busy campaign in Dubai, where she will
tackle the T53 wheelchair events across the 800m, 1500m and 5000m distances.

Now based in Sydney under the mentorship of renowned
wheelchair racing legend Louise Sauvage, de Rozario at just 25 years of age, is
already a triple Paralympian, and a medallist at Paralympic, World and Commonwealth
Games levels.

Perris – who also trains outside of Perth in Canberra under
coach Iryna Dvoskina – will be looking for a big campaign in Dubai when he
races in the men’s T13 100m and as a member of the Australian 4x100m relay team.

The man known in competition circles as “White Tiger” for
his snow-white hair is himself building an extensive and impressive career
resume. One that identifies Perris as a star of international track sprinting
and as a highly popular member of the Australian Flame team.

Perth based Pardy first made her name in international
competition at the 2016 Rio Paralympics where she won a bronze medal as a member
of the Australian women’s 4x100m relay team.

Trained by Danny Kevan, Pardy has also represented Australia
twice at Commonwealth Games level. She will run in the T38 100m and 200m
double.

At the Gold Coast Games in 2018, Rhiannon Clarke was one of
the stories of the competition from a Western Australian standpoint, earning a
silver medal in the women’s 100m on debut, whilst still studying in high
school.

She has continued to develop from strength to strength in
the time since and will compete in the women’s T38 100m and 200m in Dubai as she makes
her World Championships debut. She is coached by Braiden Clarke.

It’s a family affair for Sarah Edmiston in the F44 discus,
with the elite thrower coached by her husband Paul Edmiston.

Edmiston enjoyed a breakout competition at the previous
World Championships in London in 2017, where she won a bronze medal in the same
event.

She’s since improved on her personal best and was forced to
wait out the 2018 Commonwealth Games with her disability class not included on
the competition roster. Expect her to be raring to go as she earns the
long-awaited opportunity to don the green and gold again.

In the T34 women’s 100m, wheelchair racer Robyn Lambird will
get her first taste of senior international experience at a major competition
meet.

The UK born, Perth based West Aussie has had a career best
year in the sport and will be looking to gain valuable experience in Dubai as
she pushes on for a first Paralympic Games team in 2020.
