Slalom Canoe Selection Trial set for Finale in Penrith

Published On: 18 February 2016

The final selection trial for the Australian slalom canoe team set to compete at the 2016 Rio Olympics will be determined this weekend at the Oceania Championships in Penrith.

Fighting for selection in the men’s C1 class, will be WAIS athletes and 2012 London Olympians Kynan Maley and Robin Jeffery, who will both be chasing the one available spot, pending Australia secures a selection quota in the class at these Championships.

The current front runner for the C1 spot is NSW paddler Ian Borrows, who claimed victory in the first selection event at the Australian Open in Penrith earlier this month, where he finished 12th overall.

Maley and Jeffery finished 14th and 17th respectively at the Australian Open and will both know that only a win will be good enough to keep alive their selection hopes.

Australia will secure a quota spot in the C1 class for Rio, if one of the nominated Australian trio of; Borrows, Maley or Jeffery finishes competition with a higher ranking than their Oceania regional neighbours, chiefly the nominated paddlers from New Zealand.

Australia is required to qualify a C1 boat at the Oceania Championships, having missed automatic qualification in the class at the 2015 World Championships.
