Olympian Carrie Smith has made a strong start to her Kiel Week campaign in Germany currently sitting in second place after the first day of fleet racing.

Smith and her crew Jaime Ryan won the opening race and consolidated second place in the women’s 470 field with a fifth place effort in the second race of the day.

The pair sits between two German crews and will look to push for a podium finish at the weekend’s medal round – for the top 10 ranked crews.

Smith is one of five Western Australians in action in Germany and is joined in the 470 class by developing WA athletes Nia Jerwood and Monique de Vries – who are currently eighth overall, following sixth and ninth place finishes.

In the men’s 470 class, West Aussie Chris Charlwood and his crew Josh Dawson hold seventh place overall, having earned a highly impressive third place effort in the day’s second race, after opening with a 13th.

In the 49er class WA sailor David Gilmour is just off the podium at the culmination of day one racing having posted first, fourth and third place efforts in a productive display along with his crew Joel Turner.
