The Be Active Western Stars made an excellent start to the 2013 Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball League, winning three of four round one matches in Sydney to sit second on the competition table.

The Stars recorded big wins over the Sydney Uni Flames (57-35), the Stacks Goudcamp Bears (73-56) and the Minecraft Comets (66-41) with their only defeat against a powerful Victorian outfit (60-49) boasting an array of national team representatives.

The start of this year’s WNWBL was highlighted by the return to action of a large group of Australian Gliders, who were in club competition for the first time since claiming silver at last year’s London Paralympic Games.

The Western Stars were given enormous attacking prowess from WAIS athlete and Paralympian Amber Merritt who scored over 120 points for the weekend, whilst the all court pressure and creativity of fellow WAIS Paralympians Clare Nott and Sarah Vinci ensured the Western Australians will be firmly in the mix for competition bragging rights in 2013.

Merritt hit 28 points against Sydney Uni, and backed that up with hauls of 29 points against the Bears, and another 37 against the Comets and finished with over 120 points for the round after impressing in the team’s defeat to Victoria.

Nott was prolific in assisting Merritt’s scoring drive and the Stars will head into the next round of fixtures well placed for a shot at finals.

Round two of the WNWBL commences on Friday June 21 at the Herb Graham Rec Centre in Mirrabooka.
