State Records for WA Junior Cyclists

State records have fallen over the weekend as WA’s emerging track cycling athletes prepare for next month’s Junior National Championships in Launceston.

Dual Junior Track World Championship representative Tahlay Christie ensured she will enter nationals in full confidence after posting a new state record of 35.518 in the U19 women’s 500m time trial at the Midvale Speed Dome.

Christie is considered one of Australia’s brightest young sprint talents, and her efforts on Day Three of the Junior State Championships saw her finish ahead of two fellow WAIS talents, in Jade Haines (36.878) and Niken Jeffries (39.492).

In the U19 men’s kilo – 1000m time trial – WAIS athlete Kye Bonser claimed victory, again in state record time, after clocking 1:05.365 to finish ahead of WAIS training partners Craig Wiggins (1:06.763) and Matthew Richardson (1:06.830).

The 2016 Junior Track National Championships will be held in Launceston from 24-27 February and will form the selection event for this year’s Junior Track World Championships.

In the open events – WAIS athlete Rebecca Stevenson won the women’s 500m time trial, whilst fellow WAIS scholarship athlete Darcy Pirotta was second in the men’s 1000m time trial.

The senior Track National Championships are scheduled for 3-6 February in Adelaide.
