Sting Make Solid Start to 2015 ANL Season

The Western Sting made a good first of their first involvement of the 2015 Australian Netball League, winning two of their three matches in Darwin.

Having had the bye in the opening ANL round, The Sting recorded comfortable wins over Territory Storm (74-29) and Canberra Darters (60-38) in round two before losing their final match 50-41 against the Victorian Fury.

The Sting return to action this weekend, with round three matches against the NSW Waratahs (6pm Saturday) and QLD Fusion (12pm Sunday) at the WA State Netball Centre in Wembley.

The Western Australian outfit welcomed a collection of West Coast Fever squad members for their Darwin campaign, with Ingrid Colyer, Courtney Bruce and Kaylia Stanton all taking to court.

With the three players spread across the court, Bruce was busy in defence, whilst Stanton kept the scoreboard ticking over in the goal circle with 39 goals against the Storm and a further 34 against the Darters.

The Fury – 2014 champions – proved a tougher assignment for the WA side, but the team acquitted themselves well, particularly in defence to stay within striking distance throughout.

WAIS athlete Kaylia Stanton has been named in the 2015 Australian 21U team that will play a series of warm-up matches against the Australian Diamonds, New Zealand Silver Ferns and England in the lead-up to August’s Netball World Cup SYDNEY 2015.

The team will take on the Diamonds in Newcastle as well as the Silver Ferns, a New Zealand `A’ side and England in Sydney between 1-5 August. WAIS Netball Program coach Michelle Wilkins – who is also coach of the Sting for 2015 – is an assistant with the Australian 21U set-up.

“This is a great achievement by Kaylia and this experience will only help her flourish on the national stage and in developing the skills and behaviours required to be an elite athlete,”said West Coast Fever coach Stacey Rosman.

“We know how talented Kaylia is, so for her to be recognised by being selected is testament to the hard work she has applied within WA’s high performance training environment,” continued Rosman.
