Strong Start for WA at Short Course Champs

Holly Barratt and Nicholas Brown have both won medals on the opening day of the 2018 Australian Short Course Championships in Melbourne.

Barratt who last year made her Australian representative debut at the FINA World Championships in Budapest, won the final of the women’s 50m fly on day one after she finished a tenth of a second clear (25.61) of the field, with Emma McKeon (25.71) and Emily Seebohm (26.71) completing the podium.

McKeon and Barratt traded places in the final of the 100m free, with the Queenslander’s time of 52.51 too good for the Rockingham club member’s 53.36.

22 year-old Nicholas Brown collected a national title after he won the final of the men’s 200m fly. Brown recorded a time of 1:55.49 to edge clear of Bowen Gough (1:56.04) and reigning champion and Australian record holder David Morgan (1:57.36).

With the championships into its second day, the other notable swims completed by WA athletes at this stage have included good efforts from Tommy Sucipto and Katherine Downie.

Sucipto took fifth place in the final of the men’s 50m breaststroke, which was won by Grayson Bell. Downie similarly recorded a fifth place finish in her first swim in Melbourne, in final of the women’s 50m fly multi-class which was won by Madeleine Scott.
