WA swimmer Tommy Sucipto has won a silver medal at the 2016 FINA World Short Course Championships in Canada as a member of the Australian men’s 4x100m medley relay team.

Competing on the final day of competition in Windsor, Sucipto teamed with Olympians Mitch Larkin, David Morgan and Tommaso D’Orsogna as the Aussies claimed second place in the final, behind world champion Russia.

Larkin started the Australian charge in the opening backstroke leg, handing Sucipto a strong position for the breaststroke leg.

Making his short course world championship debut, Sucipto touched the wall in 57.46secs with Australia holding second place as David Morgan launched into the butterfly.

Morgan continued his strong individual form in Canada – presenting D’Orsogna with a large break over nearest rival Japan, which the Gold Coast based West Aussie was able to bring home for a silver medal.

Australia’s time of 3:23.56min was 2.39secs behind gold medallists Russia, whilst Japan held on for bronze in a time of 3:24.71.

In the earlier individual men’s 50m breaststroke, Sucipto fell narrowly shy of a semi-final berth, after clocking the equal 17thfastest time across the heats.

The 21 year-old Bateman resident was fourth in his heat, in a time of 26.78 which left him out of the semi-finals by a single spot.

With a silver medal in his possession however, Sucipto will leave his first Worlds experience with fond memories and no doubt looking to build onto a big 2017 season.

Australia closed the Championship with 11 medals, which included two gold.
