Sullivan Breaks World Record

WAIS swimmer Eamon Sullivan has smashed the World 50m Freestyle record with an electric swim that earned rave reviews around the country and sent shockwaves through International swimming circles.

Sullivan produced a performance of raw speed as he touched home in 21.41seconds to re-claim the record he had lost just last week. Alain Bernard’s former mark (41.50s) was shaved by 0.09second as Sullivan qualified fastest for tonight’s final in Sydney.

Sullivan has proved to be one of the stories of the meet after going within a fingernail of the 100m Freestyle World Record earlier in the week. He wouldn’t be denied twice, and a delighted Sullivan was beaming after the race.

“I wanted that really badly, wanted to have a crack tonight and take a bit of pressure off and a lot more pressure will be off in the final,” Sullivan said.

“I can now concentrate on the technical side of things and not just brute force and I can be more relaxed (in the final) and just enjoy it.”

“The last 25m was all brute force and no technique and it was slugging away and I sort of threw the coach’s instructions out the window,” Sullivan said.

“I will have a real crack(again) but the main thing at these trials is just getting on the team and being top two. I just wanted that badly and I just put my head down and my bum up and just threw my arms around.”

Sullivan now boasts two of the fastest five swims of all time, after eclipsing Bernard’s previous mark and all eyes will be on lane four tonight, to see if Eamon can improve on his own record.

“I like lane four, it’s been good to me and I’m really proud of myself I didn’t let him (Bernard) get to me when he broke it,” Sullivan said.

“I knew I had another chance and didn’t let it affect how I was swimming and it motivated me to swim faster.”
