Throssell Achieves Automatic Qualifying Time for World Champs

WA swimming star Brianna Throssell has achieved an automatic qualifying time for the 2019 FINA World Championships after finishing second in the women’s 100m fly final in Brisbane.

On the first night of finals at the Australian Selection Trials, Throssell swam a controlled effort to take second place behind Emma McKeon with both women set to earn selection for the Australian Dolphins team to travel to Korea in July.

With the World Championship cut-off time at 57.64sec, McKeon touched home first in 57.28, with Throssell close behind in 57.57.

The result sets up a big opportunity for the UWA West Coast dasher, with the 23 year-old also set to tackle the 200m fly and a series of freestyle events, which includes a bid to gain a spot on Australia’s 4x200m freestyle relay team.

Throssell recently spoke to InsideWAIS about the pressure and expectancy that major competition brings, stating that confidence was something earned, not given.

Night one of finals also saw Olympian Blair Evans in action in the women’s 200m Individual Medley.

Evans fought hard and finished with a highly commendable second place effort, but her time of 2:13.55 was short of the required 2:10.45.

Evans will prioritise the 400m IM which has been her pet-event over a decorated representative career.

In Day two morning heats, WA Swimmer of the Year Holly Barratt has qualified fifth fastest in the women’s 100m back (1:01.48), Kevin Kalember (6^th in 56.29) and Zac Incerti (7^th in 56.33) both progressed in the men’s 100m back, whilst World Uni Games qualified Ashton Brinkworth missed the final of the men’s 200m free with a 12^th ranked 1:50.39.
