Throssell and Incerti Commence Budapest Campaign

Published On: 24 July 2017

Brianna Throssell and Zac Incerti were both in action on the opening day of swim events at the 2017 FINA World Championships in Budapest.

The Australian team enjoyed a productive first night of finals, with Mack Horton (men’s 400m free) and the Australian women’s 4x100m freestyle relay squad both winning silver, whilst Emma McKeon equalled the Commonwealth and Australian record in qualifying second fastest for the final of the women’s 100m fly.

WA talent Throssell also contested the two-lap fly event progressing to the semis before missing the final with the 12th fastest time overall.

Throssell’s effort of 58.21 augurs well for her pet event 200m fly however, with the 21 year-old delighted with her heat swim and progression.

“I’m really happy, I didn’t really expect to make the semi-final so going through in 16th I’m really happy with that,” Throssell said. Throssell improved her ranking by four positions in the semi-finals.

Incerti cuts a dejected figure after Australia's disqualification

The excitement of making a senior international debut for Zac Incerti was tempered by the disappointment of the Australian men’s 4x100m freestyle relay team being disqualified in the final for a faulty change-over.

Incerti teamed with Cam McEvoy, Alexander Graham and Jack Cartwright to set the second fastest qualifying marker for the final, after the Aussies had posted a time of 3:12.45 in heat 1 behind top seed Brazil.

The same quartet lined-up for the final and the Australians had appeared to be in the hunt for a medal until a mishap at the final change-over ruled the Dolphins out, as Graham launched his anchor leg before McEvoy had touched the wall – leading to disqualification.

Incerti now has his individual events to look forward to, whilst Rockingham dasher Holly Barratt – who is making history as the eldest debutant on an Australian representative team – awaits her first action in Budapest.
