Throssell Continues Strong Form at Pan Pac Trials

Brianna Throssell’s impressive 2018 campaign has continued with victory in the final of the women’s 200m freestyle at the Australian Pan Pac Trials in Adelaide.

The Commonwealth Games gold medallist had already secured a berth on the Australian team for August’s Pan Pacific Championships in Tokyo after being pre-selected following a stand-out campaign on the Gold Coast in April.

But on the first night of finals in Adelaide, Throssell – who is more renowned as a butterfly specialist – claimed victory over Mikka Sheridan and Emma McKeon to show that she was not resting on her laurels.

Throssell won in a time of 1:58.09min in an exciting final that saw the top three separated by just half a second. The UWA-West Coast swimmer was short of the automatic Pan Pac qualifying time of 1:56.34, but will be eligible for the event based on her team pre-selection.

There was also a bittersweet trials victory for Blair Evans in the final of the women’s 400m IM on Sunday night with Evans winning in a time narrowly shy of the qualification standard.

The dual Olympian won in 4:37.65, but the time required stood at 4:37.14, a mere half a second out of reach.

Evans will return to the pool for a crack at the 200m IM on Tuesday.

Breaststroke swimmers Tommy Sucipto and George Harley both made the final of the men’s 100m back, with Sucipto fourth and Harley 10th.

Jake Packard won the final in 59.63 with Sucipto touching home in 1:00.59 and Commonwealth Games representative Harley clocking 1:02.51.

In Monday morning heat swims, Brianna Throssell returned to action to comfortably qualify for this evening’s final of the women’s 100m freestyle. Throssell was fourth in 55.12, with Cate Campbell (53.38) leading a talented group of qualifiers.

22 year-old Nicholas Brown set the fastest preliminary time in qualifying for the final of the men’s 200m butterfly. Brown hit the wall in 1:58.50 but will need to shave off further time to threaten the Pan Pacs qualifying time of 1:55.58.

In the women’s 100m backstroke, Holly Barratt safely progressed to tonight’s final with the eighth fastest time of 1:02.00.

Barratt’s seed time of 59.66 is below the qualification standard, but she will need to swim beneath the automatic qualifier of 59.82 and ward-off stiff competition in the form of Emily Seebohm, Kaylee McKeown, and Hayley Baker, with only two spots open.

The 2018 Pan Pac trials continue through til Wednesday evening.
