Throssell Crowned WA Swimmer of the Year

Throssell has been named as the WA Swimmer of the Year

Australian Dolphin team member Brianna Throssell has been named 2015 Lyn McClements Swimmer of the Year at the Swimming WA Swimmer of the Year Awards.

The 18-year-old WAIS scholarship holder was recognised for her outstanding efforts in the pool over the past 12 months at a special breakfast at the State Reception Centre in King’s Park on Saturday.

Brianna Throssell was selected to represent Australia at the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games last August, coming home with a swag of medals. Throssell claimed seven bronze medals at the Youth Olympic Games including three individual medals in the Women’s 200m Freestyle and 100m and 200m Butterfly events.

The swimmer from the Perth City Swim Club backed up the strong showing in Nanjing with a standout performance at the Australian Short Course Titles in November. The 18-year-old claimed two national titles by winning the Women’s 200m Butterfly and 800m Freestyle events. Throssell’s outstanding performance at the Short Course Nationals saw her selected to represent Australia at the FINA World Short Course Championships in Qatar, where she made the final of the 200m Butterfly.

In January, Throssell made the 2015 State Championships her own by claiming a total of 10 state titles, breaking numerous state records on her way to being awarded the SCODY scholarship for the top performing female age athlete at the meet.

Throssell’s outstanding year was capped of when she was selected on the Australian Dolphin team that will compete at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia later this year, following her silver medal in the 200m Butterfly at the Hancock Prospecting Australian Open Long Championships.

Throssell was undeniably thrilled with being award with the 2015 Swimmer of the Year.

“I feel absolutely honoured to be receiving this award today,” Throssell said.

Throssell paid special tribute to her Coach, Matt Magee in receiving the award.

“I could not have made it to where I am today without you,” she continued.

Throssell also picked up the Age Swimmer of the Year award which is presented to an athlete from 13-18 years of age for their achievements in both Age and Open levels of competition at a Local, State, National and International level.
