Throssell Wins World Championship Title

Brianna Throssell has won a maiden world championship gold medal in a dream first night for the 23 year-old at the 2019 FINA titles in Korea.

Throssell earned a berth in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, after Shayna Jack had withdrawn from the Dolphins squad, and it came after the West Aussie had heroically swam a new personal best in the semi-finals of the 100m butterfly to book an individual final on Monday night.

No doubt spurred on from that performance, Throssell took her confidence to an all-time high in the relay final, joining three of Australia’s golden generation of freestyle superstars in Cate Campbell, Bronte Campbell and Emma McKeon to win a famous gold medal over the USA.

Throssell swam first change for the Aussie women taking over from Bronte Campbell and she gave it everything in clocking 53.34 to keep the team in contention as she handed over to their two quickest members with McKeon swimming into Cate Campbell in anchor.

The Aussies’ time of 3:30.21 was a new championship record and only narrowly shy of the world record time the Australians set in earning Commonwealth Games gold on the Gold Coast in 2018.

As mentioned, Throssell had earlier booked herself a spot in the final of the women’s 100m fly where she’ll join McKeon.

Her time of 57.02 was good enough for a new personal best and fifth faster qualifier. She was just .01 behind McKeon, whilst Swede Sarah Sjoestroem was quickest qualifier in 56.29.

Throssell is also scheduled to swim the 200m fly and in the 4x200m freestyle relay in what is shaping up as a busy campaign for the UWA West Coast star.
