Title Success for Storer and Pirotta

WAIS athletes have won two titles at the U19 National Road Championships in Queensland.

2014 Junior Road World Championships medallist Michael Storer claimed the men’s road race, whilst Darcy Pirotta claimed a photo finish victory in the criterium.

Storer capitalised on a breakaway opportunity in Sunday’s road race, after he and fellow West Australian Matthew Chambers put time on the peloton along with New Zealand rider Nathaniel Levin.

The WA duo utilised their numerical advantage, with Chambers leading out his OTOC Racing teammate, allowing Storer a strong run to the line to claim victory.

Darcy Pirotta’s strong 2015 form continued, with February’s Oceania Road Championship men’s road race bronze medallist – this time – adding gold to his collection after winning a sprint to the line by the barest of margins.

Both Storer and Pirotta recorded top ten finishes on Friday’s time trial course, with Storer fifth, ahead of Pirotta in eighth.

The U19 Championships were held in Elanora/Currumbin Valley, which will host the road race at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
