Western Australian Institute of Sport cyclists Josie Tomic and Scott Sunderland have both been in action at the UCI world cup event in Manchester over the weekend, with Tomic picking up a silver medal in the individual pursuit.

At 20 years of age Tomic is already a world champion in the omnium and again showed her vast potential by making the final of the three kilometre event where she came against home crowd favourite Wendy Houvenhagel.

Houvenhagel proved far too strong in the final, hauling in Tomic with a few laps remaining, but the Australian remained positive, knowing she was competing against an experienced and powerful rider.

“I was trying to do a personal best but that didn’t happen,” said Tomic who was the Junior World Champion in the two kilometre distance in 2007. “It’s only my second year at elite level and Wendy was just too good for me.”

Scott Sunderland riding for Team Jayco, competed in the men’s sprint with the 22 year-old finishing in fifth position. Reigning world champion Stefan Nimke of Germany claimed the gold medal in a time of 1min01.293seconds.

Attention next turns to Australia. Next weekend’s International Grand Prix in Perth will see a host of stars in action including Anna Meares, Belinda Goss, Tomic, Shane Perkins and Cameron Meyer. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.

There will also be a full strength WAIS cycling contingent in action, so get to the Midvale Speed Dome on Saturday 7 November to cheer them on.
