Meyer topped the final classification in the five stage 600km tour and finished in a time of 13hr52min48sec just one second ahead of Austrian rider Matthias Brandle. Meyer’s SA.com-AIS teammate Matt King finished a further five seconds behind in third.

Meyer had been sitting in second place overall, trailing Brandle by three seconds, going into the 171km final stage. But the 18 year-old went on the attack and claimed enough time bonuses to take the win.

Meyer entered the tour under a fitness cloud, with his first two stages significantly hampered by a head cold. Meyer made his big move after finishing second in the third stage time trial.

The Tour of Berlin is Meyer’s second major tour win for the season after he also claimed two stage wins and overall honours in the tour of Wellington, last February. Meyer is also a five time Junior World Track Champion.

Earlier this month Meyer and his older brother Cameron both finished in the top 20 of the Giro delle Regioni in Italy.

In other cycling news, WAIS athletes Luke Durbridge and Sarah Kent have been named in the Australian road team to contest the Junior World Championships in Capetown, South Africa from 12-20 July, 2008.

The news caps a successful fortnight for Durbridge who captured the Under-19 National Road Race Championship in Murwillumbah, NSW last week. Western Australian rider Michael Freiberg was also selected in Cycling Australia’s junior track squad.
