Tucknott Selected for MTB World Championships in Cairns

WA mountain bike athlete Reece Tucknott has earned selection on the Australian team for next month’s UCI MTB World Championships in Cairns.

The 21 year-old Lesmurdie resident recently returned to Perth after a three month campaign in Europe that saw him ranked highest of the nation’s U23 competitors.

Tucknott – who has also ridden at national championship level on the track – will contest the cross-country racing in Cairns in the U23 classification.

He’ll be joined in action by seven other Australian representatives in the class, whilst in the juniors, Tucknott’s younger sister Sarah will get a taste of world championship action for the first time.

Five-time MTB world champion Sam Hill will be WA’s sole representative in the elite men’s competition, racing in the down-hill class.

The World Championships run from September 5-10 in Queensland and will be the final benchmark competition before the selection process for next year’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games begins in late 2017.

MTBA CEO Shane Coppin expects the Aussies to make their mark over the five-day competition.

“Australia can be very proud of the team that has been selected and we know they will certainly be giving it a red hot crack in front of a very vocal home crowd.”
