WA Athletes Compete at the 2018 Sydney International Rowing Regatta

With the 2018 Sydney International Rowing Regatta currently underway, WA’s competing talent have registered some encouraging performances.

Rio Olympian David Watts earned World Cup selection during the week in the men’s quad. In Sydney he combined with Nathan Bowden for a bronze medal in the A Final of the men’s coxless pair.

Watts and Bowden finished in 6:43.83mins with victory taken-out by Simon Keenan and Joshua Booth ahead of Alex Purnell and Nicholas Purnell.

Reigning WAIS Junior Athlete of the Year Bronwyn Cox teamed with Giorgia Patten for a gold medal in the U23 women’s coxless pair with the duo posting a winning time of 7:33.01mins.

Sam Marsh has collected a silver medal in the A Final of the U23 men’s single scull which was won by Tom Schramko.

Marsh led to the 1500m mark but was overhauled in the closing 500m, eventually recording a finishing time of 7:23.09mins.

Annabelle McIntyre – who shared Junior Athlete of the Year bragging rights with Cox – competed in the A Final of the open women’s coxless pair alongside Rosie Popa with the duo finishing in second place.

McIntyre and Popa clocked a race time of 7:28.74mins with victory going to Sarah Hawe and Molly Goodman. London 2012 Olympian Hannah Vermeersch, competing with Leah Saunders finished eighth in a time of 7:54.62mins.

Siena Zamin raced home in fifth position in the A Final of the U23 women’s single scull which was won by Ria Thompson. Zamin’s time was recorded at 8:16.89mins.

Chris Hayes raced in the B Final of the open men’s single scull where he finished in fifth position with a time of 7:30.39mins.
