WA Netballers Earn National 17U/19U Call-ups

WAIS netball scholarship talent have earned selection for the 17U and 19U national squads following strong performances for the State at the recent National Netball Championships in Adelaide.

The structure of pathway support for netball changed at the end of 2017, with WAIS backing a Netball WA led approach that has seen the State governing body centralise its talent pathway and directly employ a development coach.

WAIS closed operation of its netball program and now contributes to the sport through servicing assistance to scholarship athletes determined between the organisations to ensure the state continues to promote elite junior talent through to the senior level.

WAIS scholarship athlete Sloan Burton has received selection for the 17U squad, whilst fellow WAIS talents; Sunday Aryang, Olivia Lewis and Molly Warne will all feature in the 19U squad.

Those selections have been further embossed by WA athletes Ella Sigley, Giselle Taylor and Ella Taylor earning selection in the 17U ranks, whilst Kate Bunten received a call up for the 19U squad. In total, the State boasts eight athletes in the representative squads.

Netball WA CEO Simon Taylor said the selections were a strong indicator for the new pathway structure’s role.

“It’s fantastic to see some of our State’s best up and coming netballers rewarded for their efforts at the National Netball Championships,” Taylor said.

“For WA to have a number of players in these National Squads highlights the success of the Netball WA Athlete Pathway, which we expect will to continue to develop into the future through our 2018-2022 High Performance Plan.”

Players selected in the national squads will be part of a development camp, with the 19U to run in July and the 17U squad camp to be conducted in October.

All three camps will be held at the Netball Centre of Excellence in Canberra.

The selections come as the 2018 Australian Netball League commenced last weekend. Western Australia hosted the Tasmanian Magpies with the teams splitting the two-match series one win apiece.

Round two of the 2018 ANL will see Western Sting travelling to Darwin to face the Northern Territory.
