WA’s elite rowers have been in action at the Sydney International Rowing Regatta in Penrith this week as the domestic season draws to its conclusion.

Olympian David Watts was recently selected for the 2017 Senior Australian Team in the men’s double scull alongside partner Luke Letcher. In Sydney, the duo contested the men’s coxless pair – finishing fifth in the sweep event A Final.

James Kerr was selected to compete at World Cup 3 in Switzerland as a member of the Australian lightweight men’s quad scull. In Sydney he turned his attention to the lightweight single scull, finishing in fourth place in the A Final, third of the competing Australian rowers.

WA rower Chris Hayes qualified for the final of the men’s single scull – taking seventh place – with victory going to Spencer Turrin.

London Olympian Hannah Vermeersch made the final of the women’s single scull, racing home in eighth spot, with Maddie Edmunds claiming line honours.

In the U23 events, WA’s fortunes were highlighted by Annabelle McIntyre and Bronwyn Cox who claimed the coxless pair title.

The result will boost the athletes’ selection chances for Australia’s U23 squad to tour internationally in 2017.

In the U23 men’s single scull, Sam Marsh qualified for the A Final, coming home in fourth place.

The Interstate Rowing Regatta is yet to be completed and will pit state v state this Sunday, whilst a selection regatta for national U19, U21 and U23 squads will be hosted in Penrith from the 24th of April.
