WAIS sailing athletes have made a successful start to the Sail Melbourne World Cup event at Port Phillip Bay.

Rio hopeful Carrie Smith leads the women’s 470 class with her crew Jaime Ryan (QLD), after the pair posted two race wins from as many starts on the opening day of competition.

David Gilmour and his crew Rhys Mara (VIC) recorded two wins and a third from their three races to lead the men’s 49er class, whilst Caitlin Elks, who is crewing for skipper Tess Lloyd (VIC), lead the women’s 49erFX ranks.

Fresh from a World Championship silver medal last week, WAIS sonar sailors Colin Harrison and Russell Boaden along with NSW teammate Jonathon Harris currently hold second spot in the three person keelboat.

The trio earned third and second place finishes from the day’s two races.

Emerging WAIS sailor and former Youth World Champion, Mark Spearman occupies fourth position in the men’s laser class, following a third and 10th position finish from his two races on day one.

Sail Melbourne runs through until Sunday December 13 and includes 180 sailors from 23 nations with nine Olympic and three Paralympic classes being contested.
