WAIS swimmers competing at the 2014 Oceania Championships have enjoyed medal winning performances in Auckland.

Following on from her recent strong form at the Age National Championships in Sydney, Tamsin Cook (West Coast) again produced a gold medal winning effort in New Zealand.

Cook set a new Oceania Championship meet record in winning the women’s 400m freestyle final. In a controlled and well executed swim, Cook clocked a 4:10.94 to touch home first for victory in record time.

Cook went on to add a silver medal to her collection, after finishing second in the final of the women’s 200m fly.

Fellow WAIS athlete Damian Fyfe earned bronze medals in the finals of the men’s 200m and 400m events in a solid meet for the West Coast club-member.

Emerging WA swimmers Nicholas Brown and Sacha Downing also contested strongly in New Zealand, with the duo – who are set to accept scholarships with WAIS for the next scholarship period – returning gold medal performances.

Western Sprint club-member Nicholas Brown, won gold in the 100m fly, before adding dual silver in the 50m backstroke and 200m fly.

Long distance specialist Downing (Perth City) won gold in the 800m free and displayed some solid pace in the shorter 400m event, for second place behind Cook.

There were also WAIS winners at the weekend’s Swimming WA Awards, with Katherine Downie winning the Mulit-Class Swimmer of the Year, Yolane Kukla taking out the Age Swimmer of the Year, Eamon Sullivan scooping the Swimmer’s Swimmer Award, Adelaide Hart the President’s Trophy and Tamsin Cook handed the Bob Bestman Trophy. WAIS coach Michael Palfrey was anointed the Coach of the Year.
