WA Swimmers Return Medals from Short Course Titles in Adelaide

Western Australia’s high performance swimmers returned a swag of medal performances from the 2017 Short Course National Championships held in Adelaide.

Blair Evans and Kat Downie both earned individual medley gold medals, with the former winning the 400m IM and the latter claiming the 200m IM multi-class.

Evans – who recently tasted international short course success at FINA World Cup level – continued her strong form to lead the field in the 400m IM final, finishing in a time of 4:29.20 that cut nearly 10 seconds off her heat time.

Evans also managed a bronze medal in the 200m IM which was won by Emily Seebohm.

Paralympian Downie was in peak form in Adelaide, winning the 200m IM multi-class in a time of 2:31.49 before adding further silver medals in the final of the 50m free multi-class and the 100m back multi-class.

2017 World Championship representative Brianna Throssell returned a brace of silver medals, finishing behind national champion Emma McKeon in the finals of the 100m and 200m butterfly.

2016 Short Course World Championship representative Tommy Sucipto collected a silver medal in the final of the 100m breast, whilst Nicholas Brown won a silver medal in the 100m fly and collected bronze in the 200m final.

19 year-old Alex Milligan won a bronze medal in the final of the 200m breast, whilst training partner Zac Incerti took fourth in the final of the 100m free in a field boasting the return of Olympic champion Kyle Chalmers.

WAIS Athlete of the Year nominee Holly Barratt, was fourth in the finals of both the 100m back and 50m free.

Tamsin Cook enjoyed a competitive hit-out at national level for the first time since the 2016 Olympic trials, touching home seventh in the final of the 800m free, won by Jessica Ashwood.
