Western Australian Institute of Sport athletes Alana Boyd, Kim Mickle and Amanda Bisk visited Hamersley Little Athletics Club recently to help mark their 40th anniversary.

The day marked a special occasion for Mickle – who used to compete for Oceanside LAC – a member club of the Hamersley district.

“Some of my fondest memories are as a kid competing here at Hamersley,” Mickle said. “I’ve been lucky enough to represent my country and it’s such a thrill to be back here where it all started.”

The three athletes used the opportunity to promote the Go for 2&5 message of two fruit and five vegetables every day as they met with adoring fans and signed autographs.

Pole vaulter Amanda Bisk – who started track and field at the later age of 15 – told the 500 strong group that with hard work and self belief anything is possible.

“I’m proof that it can happen,” Bisk said. “I was much older when I first started, but I just had so much fun doing it. If you keep training hard and set dreams, there is no reason that any of you can’t represent Australia,” Bisk said.

Commonwealth Games pole vault champion Alana Boyd was a popular candidate for photos, and the three athletes were guest of honour at the celebrations, that also included dignitary speeches and a ceremonial cutting of the 40th anniversary cake.
