WAIS Athletes Medal in Brandenburg

WAIS athletes have returned two medals from the World Under-23 regatta in Brandenburg, Germany.

Emily Rose and Libby Alderman combined to claim silver in the women’s pair after a fantastic race against a strong young field.

Rose and Alderman led over 1500m but were pipped by the fast finishing Romanian pair of Adelina Cojocariu and Nicoleta Albu in the final stages. The WA pair finished second in a time of 7:21.66m.

Fergus Pragnell (NSW) and Nick Baxter (NSW), coxed by WAIS athlete Hugh Rawlinson, won the bronze medal in the Men’s Coxed Pair. Pragnell and Baxter were in fifth place after 1500 metres but came through strongly over the closing stages to finish behind Canada and France and earn the final position on the podium.

 

In the World Junior Championships in Linz, Austria the Men’s Four WAIS quartet of David Watts, Elliot Bannan, Christian Eyres and Harley Mooney finished fourth in their final. After winning their heat and advancing through the semi-finals, the boys raced a strong final but were edged out by Spain, Romania and Germany.

WAIS athlete Alex Hagan also qualified for her final in the women’s single scull finishing fifth with Germany, USA and Norway claiming the medals. Hagan showed tremendous potential for the future.
