WAIS Cyclists Win Gold

WAIS athletes have won gold medals on day two of the Oceania Track Championships in New Zealand.

After the first day returned a string of silver medal results, the second day of competition was even more successful for WA’s contingent competing.

WAIS athlete Alex Randell claimed victory in the U19 men’s points race after collecting 36 points across the 20km race. Third place went to fellow WAIS scholarship holder Matthew Jackson – who accrued 24 points.

Jackson himself enjoyed a gold medal winning performance after impressing in the six event men’s U19 omnium program.

Jackson was second in the scratch race and third in the 1000m time trial to ensure he carried the lowest points total across the six events – with four of the program’s events having been contested on day one of competition.

The WA cyclists’ results helped Australia increase its gold medal total to six, with track queen Anna Meares adding the women’s keirin title to the 500m time trial gold she won on day one.
