WAIS Junior Rowers Produce Medal Glut

The next generation of WAIS rowers has produced a fantastic start to the Australian Rowing Championships at Tasmania’s Lake Barrington with WA crews dominant in the U19 finals.

WAIS athlete Alexandra Hagan defended her title in the women’s U19 single scull with a comfortable victory in the final. Hagan, who represented Australia last year in the Junior World Championships, led for the entire race to record a time of 8:37.82min and win the gold medal. Hagan will also contest the U19 double scull later in the competition.

WAIS athlete David Watts matched Hagan’s effort to win the men’s U19 single scull with a dominant two and a half boat length victory over Ben Morley and Marcus Tomczak. Watts claimed his title in a quick time of 8:19.29min and provided of evidence of his future potential.

WAIS athletes also enjoyed success in the women’s and men’s U19 pair finals. WAIS athlete Daisy De la Hunty claimed victory in the women’s final along side fellow West Australia Jessie O’Mahony, with the duo leading from start to finish.

WAIS athlete Tom Gatti, partnered by WA’s David Prosser claimed victory in the men’s final over the WAIS combination of Sam Collins and Joshua Hicks in chilly conditions on the water of Lake Barrington.

The Australian Rowing Championships run from March 2-8.
