WAIS Netballers Named in 17U and 19U National Squads

The WA 17U and 19U teams have returned to Perth following an intense week of competition at the Age National Championships that saw the sides finish fifth and fourth respectively in one of the tightest fought contests in recent years.

Following on from WA’s strong performances in both levels, the Australian National Age Squads were named for both categories after the culmination of the tournament, with a large number of WA athletes included.

Western Australian Institute of Sport athletes Sophie Garbin and Natalie Bright were named in the 17U squad, where they will be joined by fellow WA netballer Phoebe Willcox.

In the 19U squad, WAIS scholarship holders Numi Tupaea, Nicole Lendich, Annika Lee Jones and Jess Anstiss all earned call-ups and will be joined by WA’s Kim Shepherd.

Netball WA High Performance Manager Stacey Rosman paid credit to the achievements of both sides, particularly the eight girls selected in the 17U and 19U Australian underage National Squads.

“We are building our programs around ensuring that our athletes develop holistically both on and off the court,” explained Rosman.

“Nationals is always an eye-opener for the girls, particularly the under 17′s, in terms of what is required of them when it comes to being an elite netballer.”

Only one athlete made the 19U Australian Squad in 2013, however with five making the draft this time round – it is apparent that the State’s development programs are progressing.

“We had five players and one train on in the 17′s last year, and with five making the next age group up this time round – it’s clear that our programs are working,” Rosman continued.

“Producing world-class athletes is our focus, and preparing the girls for the rigours of elite sport is our responsibility in ensuring the State remains at the forefront.”

“Everyone involved with the teams – coaches, support staff, supporters and players – have done an amazing job, but now is the time to regroup, refocus and continue our training as we look towards the Australian Netball League (ANL) later in the year.”
