WAIS athlete Todd Skipworth and his men’s lightweight four crew finished fifth in the final of the World Cup 2 event in Germany this weekend.

Competing against the best European and international crews, Skipworth partnered the Tasmanian trio of Anthony Edwards, Blair Tunevitsch and Sam Beltz to record a time of 6.14.00mins to finish behind Great Britain, Denmark, Czech Republic and Serbia.

Australia moved into the A-final with relative ease after qualifying through both heats and semi-finals, avoiding the repechage.

The final however, proved to be a race between World Cup 1 winners Denmark, and the British and Czech Republic crews. The Czech Republic boat raced out to an early lead before Great Britain stormed home and withstood a late Danish fightback for the win.

Great Britain crew member Richard Chambers said following the race “It was a good race. I enjoyed it. It was a tough competition but we delivered a good performance. Good to win again here in Munich. The next weeks we will train for more speed and to deliver a better race plan.”

AIS-WAIS athletes Perry Ward and Ross Brown competed with Michael McBryde and Angus Tyers in the second Australian men’s lightweight four boat, finishing fifth in the B-Final.

The Australian team will now head to Varese, Italy to attend a 15-day training camp at the Australian Institute of Sports European Training Centre, before competing at World Cup 3 in Lucerne, Switzerland from 9-11 July.
