WAIS Sailors Enjoy Golden Summer Campaign

Published On: 20 January 2011

Hi Team!

The Australian Sailing Youth Nationals and Class Nationals were held over the first two weeks in January and WAIS Youth sailors have sailed very well, winning National titles in five classes.

Matthew Wearn won both regattas in the Laser Radial, winning five races in a row. This put him on the top of the podium and in line to be nominated to the Australian Youth Team to compete in the Youth World Championships in Croatia in July.

Joining him on the team is Eamon Robertshaw, who won the Youth Nationals on the Bic Techno, by only a point after a slow start and a battle to get in front of his NSW opponent, Sam Treharne.

WAIS pair Carrie Smith and Ella Clark won both their regattas against a tough team from Queensland, to qualify for their first Youth team. The pair sailed very well on the second last day to score a convincing win in race 10 which put them 11 points ahead and not able to be caught on points. They were then able to sail the last day knowing they had won overall.

Matthew Jerwood won the 420 Nationals overall for the second year, with two races to spare after a convincing start to win six races in a row. His crew from Victoria, Tim Hannah was happy to be part of a great team and won his first 420 National title.

It was a great summer for the WAIS sailors with titles won in eight categories.

Thanks to the support staff at WAIS for helping us so much to achieve these results, and helping us as coaches to develop our skills.

Thanks again for all the support.
