WAIS Sailors Nominated for Top Awards

Western Australian Institute of Sport athletes have been shortlisted for major honours at the 2016 Australian Sailing Awards.

Paralympic gold medallists Colin Harrison and Russell Boaden, along with teammate Jonathon Harris are in contention for the Sailor of the Year with a Disability.

Competing in the three person sonar class in Rio, the Australians claimed gold after leading from day one right through to the medal round.

Harrison and Boaden were also finalists for the WAIS Athlete of the Year Award at the recent WAIS Annual Dinner.

470 sailor Carrie Smith and her partner Jaime Ryan have earned nomination for the Female Sailor of the Year Award – after they competed in Rio at the Olympic Games, following a qualification campaign that had been significantly compromised through illness to Smith.

Smith is joined in the running, by Annabelle Davies and Hayley Clark – who won a youth world championship title earlier in 2016, competing in the 29er class.

Nia Jerwood and Lisa Smith also earn nomination for the Award, following their efforts in finishing second in the 420 class at this year’s Youth Sailing World Championships in Malaysia.

Three WAIS scholarship holders are in the running for the Youth Sailor of the Year Award – with Conor Nicholas, Zoe Thomson and Alistair Young all in contention.

The 2016 Australian Sailing Awards will be presented this Saturday in Sydney.
