WAIS Sailors Take on Hyeres World Cup

Racing got underway at the ISAF Sailing World Cup Hyères on Wednesday across ten Olympic and two Paralympic classes.

Highlighting the early results for WAIS, has been the outstanding form of the Australian sonar crew, containing WAIS athletes Colin Harrison and Russell Boaden along with NSW’s Jonathon Harris.

With plenty of sailing to go, the trio could scarcely have made a better start, with a second place finish in race one, bettered by a race win in their second outing.

As a result of their early form, the Australian crew currently lead the regatta.

Matthew Wearn has had a difficult start to the men’s laser class, registering a 26th and 35th placed finish to currently reside in 35th position overall. Also competing in the laser fleet, fellow WAIS sailor Luke Elliot is 38th overall with a best finishing position of 27th on day one of racing.

There is a tense battle developing between Australia’s 49erFX crews, better known as the women’s skiff. WAIS athlete Caitlin Elks and her helm Tess Lloyd are in 15th place, one position behind Australians Olivia Price and Eliza Solly in 14th.

In the men’s skiff (49er) WAIS athlete David Gilmour and his crew Rhys Mara are in 28th position with a 12thposition finish representing their best result to date.
