Michael Storer's impressive year has been recognised with nomination for the junior male road cyclist of the year

WA Institute of Sport cycling trio Robert Power, Sam Welsford and Michael Storer have all been nominated for awards at the 2014 Australian Cyclist of the Year Awards night.

With this year’s awards to be handed out in Melbourne on Friday November 21, the talented WAIS triumvirate were recognised for their respective achievements across the year as Australia’s cycling stocks continues to rise.

Power is nominated in the men’s U23 road category, where he will come up against New South Wales’ Caleb Ewan and Tasmanian Campbell Flakemore. Power represented Australia at the UCI Road World Championships in Spain in September, riding a team support role in the men’s road race. Individually, he won a string of highly regarded European amateur races and is considered one of road cycling’s brightest young prospects.

Sam Welsford has been nominated for the junior male track cyclist of the year, following a Junior Track World Championships campaign that saw him retain his world title in the men’s team pursuit, as well as adding silver in the omnium. Welsford just this month, made his senior track world cup debut for Australia, winning gold in Mexico with the Australian team pursuit squad.

Welsford is up against Queenslander Daniel Fitter and South Australian Callum Scotson for the gong.

Micahel Storer had a break through year and has earned nomination for the junior male road cyclist of the year, having won titles at national and Oceania level in 2014. Storer’s form saw him selected for the UCI Road World Championships in Spain, where he contested the men’s junior time trial, in which, he won a bronze medal with an impressive ride.

Storer is joined in contention for the award by fellow West Australian Jai Hindley and Victorian Lucas Hamilton.
