WAIS cyclists Sam Welsford and Michael Storer have received national acclaim after winning honours at last Friday’s Australian Cyclist of the Year Awards.

Welsford won the junior male track cyclist of the year award, whilst Storer received the junior male road cyclist gong, following a campaign that saw both men win medals at junior world championship level in 2014.

Welsford retained his world title in the men’s team pursuit in South Korea this year, before adding a silver medal in the omnium, whilst Storer rode to a bronze medal in the men’s time trial at the Junior Road World Championships in Spain.

For Welsford, his success added to the Western Australian Institute of Sport Junior Athlete of the Year crown he won last month, whilst he is considered a strong chance to also feature prominently at the up-coming WA Sports Star Awards celebrated through the Western Australian Sports Federation.

WAIS road cyclist Robert Power was a nominee for the U23 male road cyclist of the year, with the award won by NSW’s Caleb Ewan.

The night’s other big winners included; GreenEDGE road cyclist Simon Gerrans, who claimed the Sir Hubert Opperman Medal as Australian Cyclist of the Year to go with his elite road cycling crown. The female elite road cyclist award was claimed by Tiffany Cromwell.

The elite track riders of the year went to Alex Edmondson (male) and Amy Cure (female), with the overall junior cyclist of the year title claimed by Macey Stewart.
