Wheelcats Share Spoils with Great Britain

Michael Hartnett esacpes opposition advances

Four WAIS IASP athletes represented the Perth Wheelcats during the recent two match series against Great Britain’s wheelchair basketball team at the Herb Graham Recreation Centre.

Brad Ness, Justin Eveson, Shaun Norris and Michael Hartnett all produced impressive performances against the 2008 Paralympic bronze medallists.

The Wheelcats stormed to a 1-0 series lead following the first match, defeating their international counterparts 74-51, with Norris hitting a game high 24 points, with nine rebounds and seven assists.

Wheelcats Captain Justin Eveson contributed 22 points with nine assists and also turned over possession with three steals, whilst Brad Ness added 17 points and was a constant threat to the Great Britain line-up.

Great Britain produced a markedly improved performance in game two to claim a six point win and in doing so guaranteed they would leave Perth with a series tie.

Great Britain lifted its intensity and physically took it to a strong Wheelcats outfit, after the home side had led at half time.

Joe Beswick led the charge for Great Britain with 19 points along with Dan Hancock who had 18 points and eight assists.

Wheelcats Captain, Justin Eveson again put in a gallant effort for the team, top scoring with 29 points and five assists.

Eveson’s fellow Australian Rollers teammate, Shaun Norris also put in a big game with 21 points and 11 assists, with both men prominent over the two match series.

The Perth Wheelcats are back in action in the national league this weekend, with the ladder leaders hosting West Sydney on Saturday from 7pm at the Herb Graham Recreation Centre in Mirrabooka.
