Track Worlds -
What a year! It still has not sunk in yet that I am a world champion and am able to wear the rainbow jersey for a year and the world bands for the rest of my track career. To place fourth in the world championships in 2007, 2008 and the Olympic Games made me so hungry to train harder and achieve my goal of being the world points race champion.
I was the happiest man on the planet that night and any result in my next two events would of just been a bonus. Two nights later I was riding off for the Gold medal in the teams pursuit. Our Aussie team rode an awesome race to just finish second behind the strong Danish team.
The next day I had the Madison with my teammate Leigh Howard. Going into the last 50 laps of the race we were only on 2 points and were in about 10th place. We gave it one big crack at taking a lap on the field to move us into the medals and it worked. We finished with a silver medal in a race that two years ago I lost two laps in.
So the medal count from three events was one world championship and two silver medals. I could not be any more pleased with the results and hope that this is just some of many more to come.
I look forward to the Perth Grand Prix at the end of the year where It could be the first time that I ride in the rainbow stripes in front of a home crowd.
Giro d'Italia -
I am now officially allowed to say that I will be racing the Giro d'Italia. When I thought the 2009 year could not get any bigger or better then it already is, my team Garmin Slipstream take me from the Tour of Romandie roster in Switzerland and switch me to a Grand Tour.
The 9th of May will be my first race in Europe in the Pro Peloton and I will be racing on an Island in Venice at around 56km/hour average over20km,with 8 other team members on time trial bikes, in front ofhundredsof thousands of people, with the number one goal, having Christian Vande Velde in the Maglia Rosa leaders jersey. Sound scary enough? I can not be more excited about the opportunity I am receiving from my team and theconfidencethey have put in me.
I will race only the first 13 stages of the tour. The team knows that putting me into this race at such a young is a huge step and have done so to help me gain experience and most importantly adding to the very strong line up of time trialists in hope of going back to back winners in the teams time trial on stage 1.
The last week I have spent hours trading turns with some of the fastest and strongest men in the world. Christian Vande Velde (4th 2008 Tour de France), Bradley Wiggins (3 x Olympic and multiple World Track Champion), David Zabriskie (holder of the yellow jersey 2005 Tour de France), David Millar, Julian Dean, Danny Pate and more. The team will go in asfavorites to win the opening teams time trial and fingers crossed that wesucceed.
So for the rest of my time in the Tour, it could be spent on the front riding for a team mate wearing the leaders jersey or just holding on for dear life as the GC contenders dance their way up the mountains. What ever happens I will be there representing my Team, Australia and of course my home state of Western Australia.
I would like to thank anyone and everyone who has helped me get to this point. I hope you all can enjoy watching a friendly face race through Italy in its grandest tour and that I can do you proud.
I hope to put some updates of my progression in the tour up on my website at www.cameronandtravismeyer.com.au So please feel free to take a look and any support is most welcome.
Ciao
