Community Development Program

WAIS Athlete Appearances
WAIS elite athlete appearances include a range of community, corporate and school requests for role models; sports ambassadors and guest speakers. These are arranged through the WAIS Marketing Department.

Community Programs
In 2005 WAIS was registered as a training organisation with the Active After School Program developed by the Australian Federal Government. WAIS athletes have been educated as trainers and will represent WAIS in the community to support this initiative in the community.

In 2007 WAIS, in partnership with the Department of Sport and Recreation, are piloting the Regional Gifted Athlete Program which takes the important aspects from the WAIS Athlete Career and Education department and delivers these messages and key skills to the Smarter than Smoking Scholarship holders in the region to assist in their development as athletes.

Regional Tour
In conjunction with the WA Olympic Council, WAIS Athletes undertake regional tours after each significant sporting events (e.g. Commonwealth Games / Olympic Games). This activity engages many remote country communities, allowing them to share in the journey of achievement.

* Please Note: Community Ambassador Initiative not in current program due to funding and resource requirements.

WAIS Tours
These are a 'behind the scene' look at the operations and training required of athletes to reach their dreams. Tours are arranged by the WAIS Marketing Department and conducted by WAIS elite athletes. They include the following;
  • a motivational talk by the athlete and
  • a multimedia presentation about WAIS and elite athletes in training or competition;
  • a guided tour of the Western Australian Hall of Champions, Challenge Stadium, WAIS laboratory and gymnasium including explanation of activities and training suited to the level of student. by athlete or available WAIS staff.
  • a question & answer session to conclude

What are WAIS Tours?
WAIS tours are organized by the Marketing Department at WAIS, supported by the ACE Department. Tour Guides are elite athletes, trained to take interested groups around the institute. Groups are a maximum of 15 people to 1 athlete guide and the tour takes people through the building, offering an insight and education into each area of operation of WAIS from coaching to administration, sport science and talent identification.

Why run WAIS Tours?
WAIS offers tours of the facility as a way of expelling the myth, and educating members of the community, regarding why WAIS exists and the services WAIS provides. By taking people behind the sc enes WAIS is able to show what training an elite athlete has to do, what services the athlete requires, and the level of commitment, sacrifice and resources it takes to be a champion. It also enables WAIS to put out messages about WAIS on our terms, using WAIS athletes as ambassadors of the institute to show the kind of talent and commitment we support and their potential to be role models and inspirational to the community.

Who can participate?
The tours are open to any group from any organization and background, whether this be a sport club, a corporate, a school, or simply a group of interested individuals, the objective is the same: to show them all what WAIS is and does, and what it takes to be the best. WAIS formally started running tours, led by athletes, in 2001. Since then, the demand has grown, with school groups being the most popular due to WAIS being one of the only organisations to conduct physical education related excursions.

When are tours run?
Tours are run during working days, Monday Friday, 9am to 4pm.
