WAIS Community Development Program
The Go for
2&5 WAIS Community Development Program is sponsored through Healthway and
is aimed at promoting healthy active lifestyles for Western Australians school
children through two fruit and five veg each and every day as well as regular
physical exercise.
WAIS promotes
the Go for 2&5 health message at schools, sporting clubs and with hosted
tours of its facilities. High performance athletes from the Western Australian
Institute of Sport conduct all clinics, with the athletes focusing on the
benefits of healthy active lifestyle, relaying how those themes have been
central to their success and future endeavours.
Sport plays a
crucial role in the cultural identity of Australia and this is no more evident
than in Western Australia. This cultural characteristic provides a unique
opportunity to use sport as a vehicle to combat the rising rate of obesity by
promoting active participation and healthy lifestyles.
WAIS is proud
to promote the Go for 2&5 health message and utilises some of Australia’s
best athletes – from over 30 different sports including; athletics, cycling,
rowing, gymnastics and hockey, and including Elite Athletes with a Disability –
to promote the benefits of active participation and healthy lifestyles to the
community in general, and young people in particular.
WAIS is aware
that physical activity and healthy eating are important factors in ensuring
Western Australian children remain healthy. WAIS also recognises that by aligning
key health messages with a strong brand that represents healthy living and by
using elite athletes as community sporting ambassadors, this encourages
involvement in sport and in turn contributes to healthier children. The
benefits for Australian sport are derived from greater participation in
sporting activity. The benefits for the Australian health sector are derived
from a healthier population. Overall the Australian community reaps the rewards
of a healthier lifestyle.
