Going for Gold | Champions from the West
In late 2010 WAIS launched a book which was the culmination of over two years work, work which began when the WAIS Board decided to capture the history of the Institute in the lead up to its 25th anniversary.

The 25th anniversary was celebrated in 2009 and the book launch was the extension of that celebration, coinciding with the 25th year of inductions in the WA Sporting Hall of Champions.

"Going for Gold: Champions from the West” celebrates 25 years of WAIS living out its vision of Producing Champions as well as acknowledging the 25 best ever athletes produced in Western Australia.

WAIS was founded to support high performance athletes by enabling them to achieve success on the world stage with support from their home environment.

To say WAIS has achieved what it set out to when inaugural director Wally Foreman took up the challenge to set up one of the first State Institutes in 1984 would be an understatement.

Over the past 25 years WAIS has produced 18 Olympic Gold Medallists, 23 Paralympic Gold Medallists and 39 World Champions – many of these multiple medallists. It is an extraordinary record of achievement.

These achievements follow on from Western Australia’s rich history of sporting success and part of the book is dedicated to honouring the best ever 25 athletes that this State has produced as selected by the Hall of Champions committee.

This project was only made possible by the generous funding of LotteryWest, who funded the design and publication of the book via their Community History Grant Program.

As part of the funding free copies of the book have been provided to public libraries as well school libraries around the State.

In addition to this LotteryWest has enabled a full PDF copy of the book to be available to all via the WAIS website.
