Sport Programs Overview

WAIS delivers its support to Western Australia's elite and potential elite athletes through two programs. These are the WAIS Individual Scholarship Scheme and WAIS Sport Squad Programs.

Individual Scholarship Scheme
This scheme provides benefits to athletes based on competition performance during the preceding competitive season. For junior athletes the minimum performance level is that equivalent to, or better than that required to gain Australian Junior representation at the highest under-age level for that particular sport. For senior athletes the minimum competitive performance is that required for National team representation.

Currently individual scholarships are offered in all Olympic disciplines.
Applications for Individual Scholarships go on offer in September of each year, and are awarded from November to October of the given year. Forms for applications will be available via the WAIS website and all State and National Sporting bodies will be informed about the application process prior to the dates.

Application dates for Scholarships are announced publicly in the Western Australian Newspaper each February and all relevant State Sporting Associations are notified at the same time.

Sport Programs
On the basis of a sport's rating against specific criteria, WAIS will operate and manage a Sport Program as agreed in a formal partnership with the sport's National Sporting Organisation (NSO) and the State Sporting Organisation (SSO).

The program constitutes a core element of the SSO and NSO elite athlete pathway. Programs employ a coach, or coaches, to lead and direct the program. These coaches work closely with national coaches to ensure that the emphasis and direction of the WAIS program is consistent with the national direction. The selection of an athlete in a program is based on specified criteria that are focussed on supporting elite and potential elite athletes.

At present WAIS conducts fourteen programs involving 143 athletes. The number of athletes training under WAIS's guidance at any one time fluctuates between 350 to 500 individuals.
